Hi! Today I’d like to talk you bout Emile Durkheim. He’s known as one of the founders of modern Sociology, as well as Max Weber and Karl Marx. He was born in France in 1858, in a very religious family (his father was a priest). This will be something determinant in his life and work, specially when it comes to the cientific method used in social studies, because it is against most of the postulates of methaphisics, and of course, against religion. His life as a teacher can’t be forgotten, because he was one in the University of Burdeos and then the founder of the chair of sociology in France. He also dedicated an important part of his work to analize the phenomenon of education.

Durkheim’s famous for his writings about the sociological method and the division of social work, as well as for his studies about the modern state, education in france, and religion.
This autor is considered as one of the clasics in Sociology, because he was one of the first among many authors to think about social life as facts, this is, think about life in society as objective so the cientific method can be used as a way of approaching to it. This social facts relate to people in a special way -they are beyond people and colective also-. In other words, they are outside the people that live in the particular society, and thay are colective because they’re part of the culture in a determined society. This social facts are also coercitive because as people grow up and get educated, they learn the rules and regulations of the society in wich thay’re immersed in.

One of the most important branch in his work is the one related to the social division of work. This is where he considers the concepts of colective conscience, mechanic and organic solidarities. They are basic to understand a little bit more about his theories.

His publications are: The social division of work (1893), The rules of the sociological method (1895), L'Année Sociologique (1896), The suicide (1897), Moral Education (1902), The elemental forms of the religiuos life (1912) and Lections on Sociology (1912).

  1. Valentina,
You've done a very interesting and inspired job. It's almost spotless, congratulations!
Now, here you are a few things to to consider:
(This social facts): compare 'this' and 'these'
(One of the most important branch): one out of several, so we say: one of the most important people/ones/books/etc.
(His life as a teacher can’t be forgotten, because he was one in the University of Burdeos) Or: because he lectured at ...(cientific/ french) Can you correct the spelling?
